The one thing we are going to learn today is we can’t get something from nothing. To the people who think they want to buy a Motor Maul to replace the need for an high output alternator that can handle the amp draw of his amplifier.
Let’s start with a brief discussion on what a Motor Maul does. The Maul is a variable DC power supply. It’s input power comes from 2(4) batteries that are normally in parallel (both pos together and both neg together) and charge at regular automobile 14V system. When keyed down, the Maul solenoids click into action and switch the two 12 volt batteries into a series configuration. (now they are pos to neg and output 24VDC to the regulator inside the Maul and it allows anything you to dial up from 12-22VDC (roughly). When you UN-KEY the mic , the Maul shifts the batteries back to parallel and charge from your vehicles 14VDC system. Let me say it again….. “charge from your vehicles 14VDC system.” that’s YOUR alternator. You remember, the one that isn’t very big and is why you thought you needed a Motor Maul. When you UN-KEY is when your 80-100A under-powered alternator is asked to deliver massive charge amperage to 2(4) batteries. NOW, RIGHT AWAY with no regulation on how much. The longer you keyed the Maul, the more the batteries will want to suck from the alternator when it’s charge time.
“We can’t get something from nothing,” That’s what I said right? That’s right, you get a high voltage high amperage output from the Motor Maul for the 10 seconds that you are keyed down, and during that time you are walking the dog. Un-key and it’s time to pay the piper. You have to send just as much energy back into those batteries from your alternator. Don’t be fooled into thinking a Motor Maul is a AMPERAGE device. It doesn’t add to the overall amperage that your vehicle can produce.
What does it do then? In a vehicle with a properly sized alternator it can allow the user to switch to competition mode 18VDC output for the duration of a shoot-out without having to install a second 18VDC alternator system under the hood. The Motor Maul is a VOLTAGE device. It will allow the higher voltage to the amplifier than is normally possible with a one alternator setup.
Summary…Don’t buy a Maul for more AMPS, buy it for more VOLTS to compete on the line.
So you see the MADNESS is when a guy buys an $800 box to make up for the AMPS his alternator wont give, then he burns out his alternator and finds out he needs to go get an $800 big alternator install done anyways. He could have done that first and been done with it.
